Final Draft: Opinion Writing

Surprising Harm: Agricultural Subsidies

 

             In my opinion, the Government should not continue to give agricultural subsidies[1] to farmers because they have several side-effects, such as losing competitiveness, risks of industrial expansion, disturbance of freedom and possibilities of corruptions. Many people claim that these agricultural subsidies have only advantageous effects to farmers and agricultural economy. Agricultural subsidies are good news to many farmers because they are direct funds to them. Farmers can use the fund to expand their business, or invest to increase productivity of their crops. However, there are also considerable negative effects. First of all, agricultural subsidies make certain countries lose agricultural competitiveness. According to “Agrigento Korea” by Maeil Business Newspaper, the reason that certain countries lose their agricultural competitiveness is because agricultural subsidies are only given to the farmers who cultivate the main crops of the country. This phenomenon may cause many farmers to cultivate main crops. As a result, many special crops couldn’t be cultivated and invested in. For example, Korean staple diet is rice, and most of the Korean farmers cultivate rice. Therefore, Korea has less competitiveness on other crops. On the other hand, New Zealand cut off all of agricultural subsidies to farmers and the result was amazingly successful. According to the National Statistical Office of New Zealand, Agriculture accounted for 14 percent of the total GDP in previous days. However, it increased by 2 percent, and now agriculture accounts for 16.percent of the total GDP. According to Errol Hewitt, professor of Massey University, New Zealand, farmers were able to attain competitiveness in global market without subsidies by upgrading their quality of crops. This case shows the punctuation of agricultural subsidies can help a country to get agricultural competitiveness. Secondly, agricultural subsidies make farmers expand their business, which could be dangerous. The farmers tend to use provided subsidies and debt in order to expand their agricultural business to earn more subsidies because the bigger the business scale, the more government gives subsidies to the farmers. Expansion of business seems to be successful, in fact, it gives burden to farmers. Eventually, this will make them unable to control their expanded agricultural business. For instance, according to the interview of a farmer in Korea, they borrowed considerable amount of money to expand their business at first, but now, they worry about how much they have to invest more in this business, and also say that many Korean farmers are in similar situations like him. However, if there are no laws for subsidies, the farmers won’t struggle to expand their business forcedly in order to earn subsidies.
 

Thirdly, these funds hinder the liberalization of trade. It is because many developed countries give large amount of money to their farmers which stabilizes the farmers income, but it may worsen the fairness. In this case, WTO[2] also criticized that direct support funding can disturb the liberalization severely. According to CBO[3], the U.S. support about 20 billion dollars annually for the stabilization of farmers' income. It aggravates inequalities of competition. If there are no subsidies provided to farmers, the developing countries will also have an equal trade chance like developed countries in the global market. Last but not least, agricultural subsidies can cause corruption as it is easy for many officials to embezzle the funds. This is because there are many blind spots that aren’t punished. For instance, the results of the ACRC[4]'s report shows that there are about 16 corruption-related reports monthly. This means that most subsidies are not given to farmer directly. If there were no subsidies-related laws, government could use the fund more efficiently. In conclusion, due to these 4 important reasons, I believe that subsidies are unnecessary and they can even have negative influences to the farmers. Therefore, the Government should stop the continuation to support farmers with agricultural funds, and they should cut off unnecessary agricultural subsidies as soon as possible.

 

[1] Agricultural Subsidies:

Money which the government gives to farmer in their country for serving their livelihood. There are 2 kinds of agricultural Subsidies. One is direct support fund and the other one is fund for supporting their export.

[2] WTO: World Trade Organization

The WTO is a rules-based, member-driven organization — all decisions are made by the member governments, and the rules are the outcome of negotiations among members.

[3] CBO: Congressional Budget Office

Production and Ownership of Knowledge

 

There are many things that I learned about production and ownership of knowledge. First of all, I changed my writing method. It means that my production is not written on the paper. Previously, my essay was on papered form. As a result, it was really difficult for me to conserve the every single paper that I wrote. However, I learned how to write essay or assignment on my blog. Because Gary, who is my professor of English writing course in this semester, let us make our own blog. Then, he made us write assignment and midterm essay on our blog. Because it was pretty unfamiliar at first-time, I had some difficulties posting my writing on the blog. However, now I’m very skillful at writing and posting something on the internet. Most surprisingly, my essays are still preserved until now. Not only has it remained on my blog, but also many students, who are taught by Gary in this semester, commented on my blog. By communicating with other students by commenting on the blog, I was able to learn and revise the weakness of writing. Secondly, I changed my thought about ownership of knowledge. Before I learned ownership problems from Gary, I quoted and copied any pictures from the internet illegally. However, I put the reference below my essay now. This is because I was taught importance of reference by the comment which is on my midterm draft. The comment said, “Citation makes reliability so you must post reference more evidently.” I realized that adding reference on my writing gives reliability to other readers. For this reasons, I think adding citation makes the credibility of my writing sources and it makes me be more careful about writing reference. Conclusively, blog-posting and inserting citation method that I learned in the Gary’s class made my writing more lasting and reliable.

1. What has the comments others have posted on my blog taught me about my own writing?

 

The comments others have posted on my blog makes me very interesting. It is because sharing thinking with others is very awesome. As I think sharing thinking is one of social activities, so it is social network service to me like Face book or Twitter. Besides it is better than those SNS. Because I can learn something helpful on my writing. There are 3 things that I can learn by others comments. First of all, I can revise something grammatically wrong on my blogpost. As I have some grammatical mistake on my blogpost, they told me which is wrong. If you look at the example 1, you may understand very easily. Secondly, I can know what is right and what is wrong on my topic and reason. Through this, I think more about my topic and reason. Thinking more on my topic and reason helps me to do away with stereotype. For better writing, I search more examples on the internet and book. If you look at the example 2 and 3, you may know that I am on right path on the writing. Finally, I can fix something which is not main text like citation error. Now I am considerably good at writing reference. However when I begin to write citation on my blog, my citations are very unsatisfactory. At that time, some people told me that I need more specific citation and they let me know the right way to make better citation. The example 4 shows the advice which helped me. In conclusion, I think I can learn 3 thing which is helpful to my writing by reading comments.

Your topic is so attractive because it is against common knowledge. It breaks my stereotype that Yellow Dust has only negative effects on environment. Explanation is specialized, so I can understand principal of reasons why Yellow Dust is good for environment. However, I think there are unnecessary sentence to make your topic sentence unclear. That is “Of course it has many negative effect.” Your controlling idea is helpful for our environment, but readers might recall its negative effect when they read it. Finally, there is a small mistake in spelling. You need to change a word ‘ueutralize’ to ‘neutralize’ on line 12. I wish you will write a developed article in final draft. Good luck!

2) What have the comments I have posted on other blogs taught me about writing?

 

The comments which I have posted on other blogs helps me to write better by 2 ways. First of all, writing comments makes me thinking about some unfamiliar topic. When I posted my individual opinion on other blogs, I should think more and even search the internet about unfamiliar topic. It helps me to think and write more variously. For this reason, I think I can write more specifically by writing comments. Secondly, I can concern about writing better expression by writing comments. Because it is comment which is for other not me, so it makes me more consider about some expression. To sum up, I can learn 2 ways to write better and you can see several examples below this text.

        Unexpected Function of Yellow Dust for Environment

  

 

Many people know that yellow dust has only negative effect on human lives. However, yellow dust is helpful for our environment for 3 reasons.  First of all, yellow dust helps prevent global warming. According to the NOAA, yellow dust cools down the Earth. Aerosol in yellow dust diffuses sunlight, and carbon in the aerosol absorbs sunlight. This lessens sunlight that reaches the ground directly. To be specific, according to the news report of IPCC, aerosol has a -2 degree effect on global temperature. It means that it cools down the Earth 2 degree. Secondly, yellow dust neutralizes acid rain, soil, and lake. Because yellow dust contains alkaline substances, it helps neutralize the acid in rain. Moreover, there is 12% of lime in yellow dust; lime and magnesium oxide neutralize soil and lake. Finally, yellow dust is really helpful to plant growth. Magnesium and potassium are very important minerals for plant. As yellow dust supplies these minerals, it helps growth of plants. For example, because rock bed of Korea is consisting of granite, soil is lack of these minerals. In this case, yellow dust is utilized as mineral suppliers. Moreover, according to the Weizmann Institute of Science, Saharan dust supplies minerals on Amazon forest. It shows that yellow dust plays an important role as supplier which gives these minerals. For these reasons, yellow dust is helpful to the environment. Of course, it has some negative effects on human. However, it makes the Earth healthier unexpectedly.

The place which I mentally focused on

The place that I can concentrate on easily is school library because it is bright, silent, and convenient.

First of all, school library is very bright so my eyes are less tired. When I studied in my house, the light is too dim to study but lights in library are very bright so I can study well in there. moreover, I can’t turn on the light after 12a.m in my house because my mom is a sensitive person. However, I can study in bright place in library.

Secondly, school library is silent. Because I am a sensitive person, I hate noise and I can’t concentrate on studying in noisy place. For example, I try to study in subway, but I can’t mentally focused on study because of noise. So silence of library helps me to study well.

Finally, this place is convenient. What I mean is that there are everything to help me to study. To be specific, I can use computer for free in there. Moreover if I need to print something, I can print any document at a low price in there.

For these reason, the place that I can concentrate on studying well is school library. So I usually go there to study and I want to recommend this place to someone who visit my blog.
